Energy the Subtle Concept by Jennifer Coopersmith was published around 2015. Her book shows that the question, what is energy, is not entirely settled. I don’t here mean E = mv^2. A question not in the book is raised by the 4/3 scaling law, the law called the four-thirds law in connection with the 1926 article by Lewis Fry Richardson on wind eddies. A possible explanation of the 4/3 scaling law is that energy in a four dimensional system consisting of 3 dimensional space + motion has 4/3 degrees of freedom per scaling when that energy is in 3 dimensional static space. In that case, the 3 dimensional space would expand relative to the 4 dimensional system because each of the 3 dimensions has 4/3 as much energy per dimension. Since the 4/3 scaling law arises due to a ratio of dimensions, it is scale invariant. The 4/3 scaling law might explain dark energy for a variety of reasons. The 4/3 scaling law as a ratio of dimensions is scale invariant. Dark energy is called a form of energy because there is an energy analogy for the pressure leading to cosmological expansion. Is energy at all scales a form of dimensional pressure arising from energy in 4 dimensions trying to inhabit 3 dimensions? How do you conceive of energy?
