Policies adopted by BRICS are of free markets and seem to let the agents go freely. But is that really true? Is Brazil going to capitalism's freedom or to a disguised communist socialism? Is China going to be a free market in a near future? and Russia, India, and South Africa?
I feel like as long as the CCP keeps a tenacious grip on power we should never expect the advent of free market.

At least in my own country Argentina the pure market approach failed in 2001 with the collapse of peso parity to the dollar. In Brazil Lula/Dilma were mainly market oriented with some pro national industry and anti poverty measures.
The post Washington consensus of WB has always tempered Smith with Keynes understanding the importance of the state to achieve economic development. Same in China really though very different political set up.

Let me clarify a little more about what I think. Following your answer, I would point out:

R.: In my point of view, in Argentina the colapse of peso parity to the dollar failed because of mislead policies of C. Kirchner, more than because of pure free market approach.
In Brazil, Lula and Dilma (as we Brazilian tought and now we are totally sure) the corruption of institutions were the great failure. Lula is now considered (and proved) to be the most corrupt president in all the world history. I live in Brazil and I could not agree more with this. The anti-poverty measures were not in fact anti poverty, but a power project based on Marxist thought (finally declared, but untill the end of 2014, hidden).

R.: In this case, I think you´re right about "tempered Smith with Keynes understanding the importance of the state to achieve economic development", altough in Brazil (and I don´t know about the other BRICS, but I would love to) the corruption perverted the policies and we are now with no clue about if: a) the approach should be adapted to our especifical reality to work towards development; or b) It woldn´t even if the corruption haven´t lead and dominated the state machine; c) It woldn´t work at all.

I think that the BRICS countries will not grow dramatically until they go to the open market and do not boost their infrastructure. Because it requires a proper bed for any improvement.
