The tomato species were reclassified ~2004-2005 and placed into the Solanum genus as the "tomato clade". I'm pretty sure that species within the tomato (or Lycopersicon) clade are safe to eat. However, some, such as L. peruvianum, may not taste very good :). Conversely, I have eaten L. pimpinellifolium (very small and intensely red fruits) and they are quite flavorful.
