It is difficult to work on crops and chances of successful experiments are very less, that is why we prefer these model organisms to study the mechanism and then apply the same knowledge on other crops. So, according to you, for different traits and developmental studies which is better?
I have worked with Nicotiana tabacum and Arabidopsis thaliana. As for me tobacco is more easy culture to grow and work with. But for arabidopsis there is full genome and special resourse about genes and etc https://www.arabidopsis.org/
Tobacco is easier to grow and easy to work on it compared to others.
Arabidopsis thaliana is best one however to study legume biology Medicago should be preferred.

it mainly depends on your purpose. You might say that the life cycle of the plant has to be fast, then you would think to use the Arabidopsis, you might do some research on plant with big leaves, then you might use the Nicotiana, or you might think about the compounds or exudates, then you might use the Medicago. Each plant has a specific feature, and there is no real "Model organism" sensu stricto. Depending on the main goal of your research, you might find a plant more useful than another.

I ve know only nicotiana tobacco and arabidopsis , depends what you want to do. Arabidopsis is known to have a lot of literature as it was considered the model plant for genome analysis.

It also depends on what kind of research you are focusing on. For transient expression experiments, ex. Agroinfiltration, definitely the tobacco.
For greenhouse maintainace and overhead fee (pay to the institutes), in general, Arabidopsis take less space in greenhouse than tobacco.
I also agree with Anna S. Dolgova if you are using the hottest CRISPR technology, Arabidopsis will be a better choice because its genome sequence data is complete and well studied.
it depends on the type of work you want to do. We use Arabidopsis thaliana for the protein and DNA assays as the full genome is available. But for localisation assays (Infiltration) we use Nicotiana tabacum, as the leafs are better for this work and they are easier and faster to grow.
I am a chemist with botanical experiments. From these answers, it looks like Nicotiana suits my research best.

Julie Pham There are several varieties of tobacco people used for research. I had used Nicotiana tabacum Wisconsin variety (W38) and SR1 ( Petite Havana ). Some labs use Nicotiana benthamiana varieties too. Plant of Wsiconsin variety is general large than SR1 (I saw them grow to 2 meter in greenhouse). SR1 is generally smaller and don't take too much space in greenhouse. There are also other varieties researchers are using. You should look into publications to choose what you want. I saw you are based in France. In the US, some seed companies carry them. I am not sure in France.
You can also request wild-type tobacco seeds from labs in France, since a lot of labs are using tobacco as study material. When you have the asked seeds, make sure they are fresh (like recently collected seeds), not store for a long time. Fresh seeds are more vigorous, in terms of germination. You should also do a quick check-- to make sure those asked seeds are truly wild-type, not collect from a transgenic plant by mistake.

Arabidopsis thaliana has the great advantage to have a small genome whereas for Nicotiana tabacum it is relatively easy to generate a whole plant from cells (callus). from both it is easy to generate transgenic plants
Jean-Pierre Jost It is correct. But, from my observation, Julie Pham is a 'chemist' with botanical experiments. Most likely she is performing some chemical studies on plants. For a quick result, 'transient assay' is a good method. And tobacco should be a good choice for transient assay (with syringe) due to its large leaves.

It is the best you can find seeds in France, either free ones from other labs or commercial ones. Because when you buy seeds from other country. The seeds need to be quarantined in the customers in France (I think), and you have to file something. Not too sure the exact procedures. To find free seeds in France, you can start from checking papers, to see which labs are doing tobacco. Search keywords you can use "Tobacco + French + NCBI +2019".
