Hey everyone,
I am inclined to conduct an experiment during which I wish to monitor the heart rate of participants and analyse it once the experiment is over. Ideally, the device used for this would be a smartwatch that is not too costly but still accurately captures one's heart rate and allows to extract these data at the end of the experiment. Does anyone has some suggestions regarding this kind of smartwatches?

There have been done some nice studies on heart rate monitoring using the iWatch Version 6 from the dpt of cardiology in mainz, germany

I understand at times there the perception of lack of budget for a study design. I don’t understand using consumer devices for research when you could get a device that measures and records at 250 to 500 hertz sampling rate for less than the price of a laptop. I watches are not exactly inexpensive devices. i believe if persons going to cardiac research use appropriate equipment. Rate alone is a rather narrow variable when so much more useful information can be had for not that much more in raised funding.
Different heartbeat monitoring wireless devices are in the market. I heard that these devices strapped around the chest. I myself search and found "Fitbit Versa" feature which impressed me more is that, 24/7 heart rate monitoring even though you are resting or exercising.
It depends on the research question and the resolution needed for analysis. If you are only looking for a heart rate signal, then the article Reliability and Validity of Commercially Available Wearable Devices for Measuring Steps, Energy Expenditure, and Heart Rate: Systematic Review posted by Chirstoph Kampmann gives the commercial wearable devices. Although, be aware that some of these devices (e.g., Apple Watch) will only give one HR value every 30 seconds. That may not be the resolution necessary to see abrupt changes from a stimuli. Further, some of these devices may be sensitive to motion artifacts.
In some cases you may need the ECG signal to look at the QRS wave, which commercial watches will not give. Further, heart rate can is also made up of different frequency bands, known as Heart Rate Variability, that are associated with different autonomics nervous system responses to stressors/stimuli and associated with fight or flight mechanisms. To extract these metrics, you either need an ECG device of >100 Hz resolution paired with HRV software (e.g., Kubios HRV) or a wrist device like Empatica E4 that will measure HRV.
