The reason for the persistent nature of the knees (during the skeletal disarticulation sequence) is mostly said to be their weight bearing function in life, and the strength of the tendons and ligaments of this joint; however I have observed relatively early decomposition of all of the soft tissues connecting this joint. The bones remained in anatomical position, but did so for other reasons than persistence of the ligaments.
