Basic is faster for computers but might not be accurate for thicker materials like some metals or special materials like composites. Advanced methods (HSDT) are better for these situations because they can account for more complex bending and twisting. Think of it like this: Imagine a thick piece of metal. Basic methods might assume the metal bends evenly throughout, but advanced methods know it bends more in the middle. This extra detail is crucial for some materials, especially when dealing with odd shapes or when figuring out how much the material can handle before breaking. Basic methods are still useful though! They're quicker for computers, so they're a good starting point, especially if you're just getting started on a design.

both of theories are usually used for evaluation of shear deformation through the thickness. FSDT (so called Reissner-Mindlin) was invented for plates with thickness ratio order 1/10 and you will need to implement shear correction factor. HSDT are actually different theories of higher order and you can find here any for your taste. They were mostly developed for modelling of laminated composites
So, the question is, what do you want to simulate and what is the physic of your problem? I believe, if you describe the problem more, you will get much more answers ;)
