Although I have been a researcher for several years, I just recently found out that such thing as working papers (preprints) exists. I see it as a great tool to get feedback from other researchers, but, unfortunately, I do not see that writing preprints/ working papers is a widely accepted practice. What is your experience with this? Is there any widely used and known database/ search engine, where these papers can be found?
Preprints normally are only distributed to colleagues in the field, who can provide some quality critiques before you go to press.
For example, if your research area is Peat, then use Google Scholar to search for: intitle:preprint peat. Also try: peat preprints.
In physics (and, to a perhaps somewhat lesser extent, in mathematics) *the* place for posting the preprints is http://arxiv.org.
