I want to rear locust (Schistocerca gregaria) in great quantity: at least 2000 a month. Does somebody has an idea which sizes a cage should be the best? is it better to use a great cage or some small ones?
AQUAVIVA HOUSING: For 2000 locusts you can use several aquaviva tanks (dried aquarium tank) setups. However, after they lay eggs and hatching, you could need larger space. The best option is to have both aquaviva in an indoor environment; after eggs hatches move them to larger environment in a nest enclosure.
NESTING CAGE: To do a large scale breading, you may want to use nesting covering a large area 10 meters X 10 meters X 10 meters could handle several thousand live locust. The area should be adequate to provide controlled environment that mimic a natural setting, i.e. grass, leaves, trees, log, etc. inside the enclosure. For commercial breeding, this approach may be the best option to handle your population density.
