I am simulating diffusion of salt conc. in sea. I want to take it as Top layer with flow in horizontal direction. The whole layer below wihich just has diffusive mass transfer.. I applied zero flux boundary condition at bottom of the sea( a wall). Applied central difference for internal nodes. I am confused how to deal with the first node in the diffusive layer and its interaction with the convective layer at the top...How should I approach for a BC at the top..Please suggest...

I see two scenarios, (a) salt flux is due to evaporation, and (b) somehow you want to hold top layer at constant salinity. Implementation of condition (a) is more involved require rate of evaporation, temperature... and other details. However, you may impose some salt flux by giving a fixed salinity gradient as the boundary condition. Condition (b) is more artificial, here you apply constant salinity as the boundary condition. In both cases ensure enough grid refinement to resolve the salinity boundary layer. In either case, I see the fluid at the top become heavier and triggering convection apart from horizontally imposed velocity.
