If your SM is UV active after synthesis of boronic acid phenacol ester you can compare in UV. The ester and SM RF will be differ.

The curcumin stain works great. In case of boronic acids, it stains the spot orange immediately, on a yellow background. For boronic acid esters, its turning orange after some 3-4 minutes of air drying.

I will say though that I came up with the idea of making it from tumeric :) much easier than buying pure curcumin from a chemical vendor

Greg is right, also Jürgen's answer is correct. Such stains are universal in detecting boronic acids. Furthermore, curcumin or bis(demethoxy)curcumin are very cheep chemicals from many suppliers, so if you have no turmeric and you are little bit lazy, it worths to order it.
