Supervisor will less likely to contact you. Or only stupid supervisor will contact you who does not ability to attract students. Generally students are in the row in every good lab

You need to write personal request to people of your research area, that is the best option. You need to propose a project also of your area if you can and interest of your assumingly supervisor. Also request some funding/scholarship or part time teaching assistant to cover some expenses.
