An outbreak occurred so far only in Sarawak state of Malaysia in the year 2007. From one patient the virus was identified as new serotype (DENV-5) of dengue in 2013. In fact other outbreak is unlikely because DENV-5 is transmitted normally in non-human primates and even in the 2007 outbreak the symptoms appeared to be mild so that patients were easily treated.
Also that it is found only in Sarawak forests indicates that it evolved there as is naturally maintained there among the macaques. But its should be noted that the infection may be more common than the reports as the symptoms are mild and diagnosis is limited.
Kholhring Lalchhandama thanks. Though it may be evolved and maintained in Sarawak forest regions but through sylvatic cycle it may brought to many other regions/parts. We should not ignore that.
Actually I was asking because haven't heard about it or not seeing so much attention about this one. So I was wondering is it still not accepting as 5th serotype or just a usual pattern of ignoring specially by this sub-continent area.
Since his report by Dr Nikos Vasilakis, no one has spoken of this serotype much less report it, and the WHO / PAHO does not take it into account; it seems that we are in a conspiracy theory about that specific serotype ....
