Yes I use TrnSys in my thermodynamic and thermoelectric modelling. To test and evaluate the TrnSys models in terms of user demand response I do need realistic dataset, archive data or load similation data.

RAPSim was developed at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt within the Lakeside Labs project Smart Microgrid. The architect of RAPSim Manfred Rabl-Pöchacker gives an ultra-fast introduction to the tool in three minutes.

You may try Hybrid Renewable and Distributed Generation Design Software from "www.homerenergy.com". A few of my students have used this software successfully in their research projects.

There is an excellent anonymised smart-meter data set with the half-hourly consumption of over 1000 households (with half-hourly interval) for over 1-year available on request from the ISSDA:

This may be of some use to you, although these will be for typical urban/rural households in Ireland so may not be suitable for the remote/island applications you are interested in.

There is a flag indicating whether each user is residential or SME (Small-to-Medium Enterprise) but other than that there is no locational or other details information on the users.

Another possibly useful source of data is that which was used for the GEFCOM (Global Energy Forecasting COMpetition) 2012. It was hosted on Kaggle so data still available there:

This data-set has been extensively used (for forecasting at least) so is something like a 'standard' electrical demand data set. The same goes for the 2014 competition which was hosted on CrowdAnalytix:

The database available with NREL, USA is the best dataset available online for simulation with HOMER or any other software.
