We are working on the comparative study between sixteen personality types of Cattell and those explained in Ayurvedic (part of CAM) texts, as part of a thesis work. On close observation, we feel that there is a striking difference between the aforesaid two, in terms of labeling certain 'Types'. In other words, the 'types' described by Cattell are more or less seemed 'Attributes' as per Ayurvedic literature. However, we are interested to know any further research/critical studies/journal papers in this direction.
The 16 personality factors described by Cattell are dimensional traits, not types. Cattell, as most modern personality theorists, objected to the notion that human personality can be meaningfully understood in terms of discrete types, but rather as a collection of dimensional traits that can result in an infinite number of types. Cattell's 16 key traits are generally seen as the underlying foundation of the modern Five Factor Model of personality. There is a fairly extensive body of empirical literature on Cattell's assessment instrument, the 16PF. A Google Scholar search on this key term yields over 13,000 hits.

A Google search on the Five Factor Model of Personality usually yields close to 20 million hits, so I may not be able to thoroughly answer your question here! I am attaching an article that may at least give you a good start on this issue. Though not entirely without critics, it would be reasonable to say that over the past 20-25 years the FFM has achieved at least 90% dominance as the model used in empirical research in the field of psychology. People nit-pick at the details, but there are really no significant competing models.
