I am currently involved in the redesign of a tourism development in a protected area (coast and national woods) in Portugal. Our proposal is based on a reduction of the density of a preexisting tourism development through the concession of the woods and partnerships with existing facilities. I would much appreciate your help in finding case studies and benchmarking for similar strategies and contexts.

The Francis Marion National Forest in South Carolina has just completed a revised forest plan and EIS, and if not available now, will be in the next months. It is a coastal forest with about 50 inches of rainfall, near Charleston, SC. Over 50% of forest is wetlands, with several threatened or endangered species. Recreation is one of the multiple uses, with collaboration, ecological considerations, etc. Information concerning this plan revision and EIS is available on the internet. There is also a hydroecological research station on the forest (Santee Experimental Forest). Tourism is a consideration, accommodated to some degree, but not necessarily the main emphasis. If your only interest is developed tourism and concessions, then it may not be what you are looking for.
