There is no commercially viable, convenient and cheap method of producing hydrogen which is a green fuel. Electrolysis is costly though convenient. I wonder if Na or K could be used commercially in a controlled fashion to react with water, provided it turns environment unfriendly and provided these alkali metals are not expensive and production of these is manageable on large scale .

A metal like sodium is so highly reactive with water seems a fuel in combination with water. This subject must have been explored a lot and would be happy to know why is this not practical.
