Dear @Eddie, many Universities propose their policies in order to get either M.Sci or Ph.D degree! Berkley thesis and degree policies are given. In both graduate programs, you will be required to put in a greater amount of effort into your homework, research papers and projects than you did during your undergraduate education. Long gone are the days when you could sleep through class and get by with rote memorization tactics. In graduate school, it’s essential that you come to class prepared, with all of your work completed, ready to significantly contribute to the class discussion. In essence, it should be treated like a job. Your passion and sheer enjoyment of the subject is important whether you are getting a masters degree or a PhD. After graduation, both degrees will give you a better advantage over an undergraduate when applying for a position.
I have not seen any comprehensive policy distinguishing the pursuit of masters thesis and doctoral dissertation, up to the best of my knowledge. You may see parts of the policy in different universities or you may see description of each of the two dissertation, but not the whole policy.
Master Thesis, is not necessarily original. It could be, as usual, a state of the art of a filed of research. This type of project may help and prepare to proceed to a PhD thesis.
PhD thesis should be original, and some departments ask for one or two publications, in good reviewer journals, as a validation of the originality, beyond that of supervisor.

Hello Eddie. It’s an interesting question. I believe the distinction between a Master’s thesis and PhD Dissertation essentially lies in its approach, content and dept rather than in any ‘black and white’ policy document, or in its volume (pages). A PhD thesis is expected to cover relatively more in-depth analysis and yield some original insight or analytic approach. It’s an interesting question. Cheers
