I think, the important thing here is the significance of the birth of Christ, whom you may view as a great spiritual Teacher, Prophet or God, according to your religion. Freedom of conscience and religion to all must be upheld by people who love peace! And, it's fine to celebrate Christmas any either date, knowing that it's not the actual date of Christ's birth.

Well, it's a tough question. Still, I would go with truth. Even though you become atheist by not following the prevalent practice and making yourself distant from the society, doesn't matter but knowingly if you commit any mistake, that's unfortunate.

I think we here face 2 viewpoints:
1-If we consider people some truth seeking machines who do their action based on the their perception of truth then it is easy to blame them for accepting a pagan celebration date(as mentioned by Mr.Seva most probably Jesus was not born in winter) as the birthday of Jesus while they are called christian or whatever.
2-If we see benefits of some practices like Christmas as a time for people to rejoice and be together without investigating the authenticity of the date of it.
I personally like the second view that we are human and many of our deeds are not based on truth but rather the psychological and physical pleasures and benefits of many practices that may have been started as some sort of modification and forgery of truth.
