Hi everybody,
I'm undertaking my first qualitative research and am somewhat overwhelmed by the (general consensus) of time it will take to transcribe qualitative interviews -
I am intending on conducting approx. 10 x 1 hr interviews.
I have read a number of threads on this site and others, with the usual suspects being recommended, but some of these are possibly out of date. Thus, if you have up to date information, to meet the following criteria, that would be greatly appreciated:
1. I currently have a Samsung S7 and an iPad Air 2 - would either (or both) of these be 'fit for purpose' to audio record then transcribe?
N.B. I am not adverse to buying a purpose built recorder if necessary.
2. Having never done this before, I would prefer an approach that is relatively simple and certainly not too time consuming.
3. Is there such a piece of software or a purpose built device that can record interviews, transcribe direct to text and also code? Or is the last a step too far?
Very many thanks for taking the time to read this, any assistance greatly appreciated as I'm starting to get more concerned with time constraints as I approach interviewing stage of my research.

Hi Steve
1. I think either will record Ok, but I would suggest using 2 devices so if one fails you have a back up. Bit of a faff but worth the effort. I lost a whole interview when my mobile failed to record. You can also buy a digital recording device quite cheaply.
2. I find using headphones and typing up directly into Word works best. You can also then transfer the data to software such as NVivo which can be used to sort and analyse the data and even produce soem metrics if you desire.
3. I think there are a few options (double dragon software rings a bell?) but I am not an exptert. However, if you type the data up yourself it becomes part of the iterative process and will help you to analyse the data you have collected. Well worth the effort in my opinion (if you have time of course!).

Thanks also for your reply and for the Dragon and NVivo software recommends. I agree wholeheartedly with you regarding the point on typing interviews up, the potential volume of data just feels me with dread, but your iterative point is well made.

Steven, I would recommend Trint for transcription. It's a paid online service ($12 to $15 per hour of recorded audio). The results are pretty good and then you'd simply have to run through the transcript once for accuracy. This would save you a lot of time and you'd still get to read through your transcript.
