I have been using ketamine diazepam cocktail for my surgical procedures on rats. What agent can I use instead of Ketamine because of unavailability. I need anesthesia for 20 mins at a go.
Dr Alex I am not having any experience with midazolam's use. Does it produces similar degree of anaesthesia as that of ketamine. Please share the doses you are working with. Thankyou for taking out time for replying.
Dr. Kelly thank you for replying but with urethane I observed significant mortality post op. If youmay suggest a dose that works for you will be very helpful.
Post op. My rats need to survive for 90 days. With urethane tumour development is quite frequent.
We use to place the rat in a box and then turn on a isoflurane vaporizer on it.
After that you could either inject Ketamine Intramusculary or gently place a straw in the rat's trachea and titrate isoflurane vaporization for spontaneous ventilation
Midazolam alone is not enough, because it is not an anaesthesic agent: only provides sedation and muscular relaxation. Depending on the degree of severity of the surgical procedure, You can use medetomidine combined with midazolam and buprenorphine. If the procedure is very invasive or large in time you should also use inalated isofluorane as anaesthesic agent.
