With a recovery close to 100% (above or below) the error is not very large compared to the uncorrected result. In addition, recovery is an important quality criterion, as you have performed your analytics. With values around 100%, you seem to have done everything right. If, for example, a recovery value of 60 % would come out, then I would think about the entire workflow.

Hi, Ankita,

Recovery study is normally carried out to establish the Accuracy of method. Different type of samples will have different range for recovery limits like 90 to 110%, 98 to 102 % etc. Samples with high matrices will have normally a large range for recovery.

I have given one example also

if my result is 5.5 ppm

my recovery is 110%

so after correction: 5.5*100/110

my final result would be 5 ppm

I just wanted to confirm is that right or not

Actually it's a Proficiency testing(PT) sample and in instruction letter it's mentioned Results should be corrected for recovery where appropriate for the method used.

So i am extra concerned whether to report analytical result as such or to correct for recovery

If you are getting reproducible results at least 3 times no need to correct the results for recovery.

Generally, if your recovery value is in the range of 70%-110%

(sometime : 80% -120%), your method is in acceptable level.

My recommendation is, if the recovery is within the range above, don't do the correction for the results.

However, you have to report the recovery study (results) with your method information.

this is recommended in many analytical method.

Further, As mentioned by others, If you can get the value close to 100, it is very good. Also you can improve the recovery using some cleanup techniques.

You are absolutely correct. Strictly speaking, the final value should be corrected for % recovery. This is very important when you consider a residue analysis, where the permissible residue limit is at a very low level. So, if you do not correct your final value for % recovery, it may a case of under reporting or over reporting. This may lead to the passing of a faulty sample or the failing of a good sample.
