I am attempting to extract Allium cepa for therapeutic purposes for a pilot project. While there are a lot of methods listed in the different papers, I am slightly confused about a basic step to initiate the process:

should I crush the allium cepa (onion) prior to soaking in ethanol (or other reagents) as recommended by the papers or should I soak the whole bulb?

Would there be a difference either way? The surface area exposed to ethanol (or other reagents) changes-increases, if the bulb is crushed before the treatment; but would it impact the constituency/ functional quality of the extract?
