We have an Agilent GC-MS 7820A coupled with an 5975 MDS. After injection the counter is not starting and the device enters in prep run although nobody selected that and remains in loading vial stage. Injection works but there is no data acquisition. No error appears and we have to stop it manually. We are currently using a CP-Wax 58 FFAP CB. The device was not in use for more than 3 years but it's parameters are ok and everything seems to be working. Please let us know if you've encountered this situation before. Thank you!
If your injection is happening but there is no data acquisition, it would not seem to be a prep-run issue. Unless you are manually activating the injection on the GC. Without more informaiton its hard to answer this further. What software is controlling the MS and GC?
We can see the syringe washing, taking the sample and injecting. After that, nothing happens.
The GC is off now so I can't send you a picture, but the real time analysis counter does not start and in the up-left part of the screen appears a yellow box with Pre run (or something like that). Also, the message "loading vial" is still on, even though the injection had already happened.
If we do the injection manually, the Pre run message turns to Run (a blue box) and still nothing happens..

I mostly wanted to see the logbook, but thank You for the screenshot too. I cannot say that it clarified much for me, but seems like the problems start after loading method file. Can You check Your method? Like what kind if autotune file is used and all other parameters probably too.
BTY, do You use split-less mode? If not, I have once experienced that in split-mode with 1:2 ratio, GC loses vacuum and stop to acquire data, after a while. But in the beginning of the run everything looked fine.
This is normally a handshaking issue between the GC and the MS; there are temp files that are created for data storage during runs and it sounds like you are either not getting back a valid handshake from the MS (unlikely since you injected) or you are not able to write to disk. This could be a method or sequence issue. Write a fresh method, and create a fresh sequence and see if it continues

It seems like the GC is waiting for 1 of the modules to turn green (available for testing). It could be the MSD has not reached the vacuum required or the GC oven has not reached the required temperature. Check ALL the modules!
sounds like a boot up issue to me. shut everything off. restart the system in the proper order.
We tried it again..
Still no luck..
We created a new method from the default file, splitless and injected hexane solvent. After injection the same thing appeared.. PreRun and loading vial..
Could our software be the problem?
Can You please click on a notebook button- next to the stop button and attach the results?

you have not fixed your problem yet? If not. You can touch or check electric wires (or sensor) which connect sample inject part with column part.
I got the problem same to you with my HPLC system, no errors reported. I solved this problem as the way I show above.
