If you do the contacts model and choosing the right algorithm correctly, Cheek your time step increments. If it's too small it will take enormous time and finally it will stop abruptly. Are you using Abaqus/Standard?

An Abaqus/Standard analysis is generally solved by splitting a complete event into smaller parts. The user may need to split a simulation into stages which Abaqus calls steps. For example, in sheet metal forming, you may apply a clamping force in one step and then move the die in the second step. Each step is divided into increments. It may take three increments to solve step one and two to solve step two for example. The user chooses the "time" for each step, e.g. time of "2" for step one and time of "100" for step two. The user must decide how difficult it might be for Abaqus to solve each of the steps. Stamping is difficult because it involves contact, large changes in shape and plasticity. Generally, Abaqus will use a lot of increments to analyse the difficult parts of a simulation.The user should anticipate this and select a time stepping method that allows Abaqus to solve a difficult step in small increments. This done by selecting the size of the first increment of a step, the maximum size of increment that is allowed and the minimum size of of an increment. In addition, the user should specify the maximum number of increments that Abaqus should try. This will stop the analysis if it becomes obvious that Abaqus is struggling to solve the problem.

The important thing about step sizes is that the amount of change happening in each increment is determined by the ratio of the increment size to the total size of the step. So an increment of "1" during a step of "10" is the same as an increment of "10" during s step of "100".

The step time can be arbitrary, but not if the event you are analysing involves inertia. You will need to use appropriate time units, for example, for solving a DYNAMIC problem.

The .sta file provides a summary of the steps that Abaqus has used to analyse the simulation. You will be able to see if the size of step is around the minimum value you requested. If it is, you may decide to make the step sizes even smaller, or you may look to see what Abaqus is struggling with at this point. Abaqus writes information about each increment in the .msg file. You can use the information in the .msg file to find out the reason why an analysis is struggling if it is.

I'm using Abaqus/Explicit. The time step is automatic and the number of increments ist unlimited.
