I am working on making graphene oxide (GO) hydrophobic by attaching hydrophobic chains to its functional groups using a Steglich esterification reaction. I experimented with various ratios of reagents in this process. After washing the GO with DMF, methanol, acetone, and finally deionized water, I observed that one of the samples became completely separated from the water phase during the deionized water wash. Can this observation indicate that the sample successfully became hydrophobic while others did not react as effectively?
