Iam doing electrodeposition on carbon cloth of area 1x1 cm2 and 5x5 cm2 with same volume of electrolyte and electrochemical cell(all parameters are same for both) .When doing CV of electrodeposited carbon cloths 5x5 cm2 is not showing cathodic peak but 1x1 cm2 is showing cathodic peak (Anodic peaks are shown by both).
Dear Dr. Krishna, to answer your question more detailes should be described about studied process, polarization (scan rate, potential limits, variation of potential limits, anodic to cathodic peak areas ratio etc.), other electrodes (three or two electrode cell, the surface area of counter electrode). Ekaterina Zolotukhina technique: chronoamperometry,3 electrode system with CE:graphite,WE:carbon cloth,RE:Ag/AgCl,potential:initial and low=-0.9V,High:0.9V.surface area of CE=10cm2,scan rate=0.05vs-1.no cathodic peak ,only anodic peak for 5x5cm2 carbon cloth.but both peaks are there in 1x1cm2 carbon cloth
Yadhu Krishna V , please, indicate the electrolyte and its composition. Please, clarify, for 1x1cm2 electrode cathodic and anodic peak areas were equal or different? which was higher in the latter case? As an advise: try to use higher scan rate for 5x5cm2 electrode in 10 or 50 times.
Ekaterina Zolotukhina Electrolyte consist chitosan,acetic acid ethanol h2O2.For 1×1 cathodic and anodic where somewhat similar.but anodic was little higher than cathodic peak.for electrodeposited as well plain carbon cloth(5x5cm2) I did cv ,for both cathodic peak alone not coming
Yadhu Krishna V Keeping in mind the complicate composition of your electrolyte I can give an advise to find fistly which component is electroactive on electrodes. For this goal prepare individual electrolytes of chit, ac acid, EtOH and H2O2 and check CV for both electrodes in this model solutions of individual components to find which component is electroactive in cathodic and anodic area. Moreover, firstly start from blank electrolyte (background electrolyte) without all these components.
I think, that registraited responses corresponded to decomposition of H2O2 and oxygen reduction, so, if concentration of solution did not change when you change the electrode from 1x1 cm2 to 5x5 cm2, the amount of electroactive component corresponded to cathodic peak is not enough.
Ekaterina Zolotukhina Thank you for your suggestion.But I did cv in bare carbon cloth(5×5cm2) also .in that also no cathodic peak is seen.is that because of volume of electrolyte for characterisation? I used 5mM potassium ferricyanide and 1 mMKCl as electrolyte for characterisation.For 2×2 cm2 and 1×1 cm2 in 100ml cell cathodic peaks are coming.but not coming for 3×3cm2 and 5x5 cm2(cv done in 100ml cell)
Yadhu Krishna V 1 mM KCl is too low concentration for good conductivity of background electrolyte, you should use 1M for your geometry. Next point. Could you try CV in only 1M KCl electrolyte (without additives) for 1x1 and 5x5 electrodes? If you did it already, are the cathodic and anodic peaks seen? Then, try to increase ferricyanide concentration in solution for greate surface areas
