Hello, I'm interested in performing qPCR to provide a fungal species testing service for a nonprofit University of California agricultural extension organization. Ideally, I would like to perform all of the lab work myself, but I could alternatively just perform the extractions and contract out the actual qPCR with an existing service lab. Ultimately it comes down to the cost of the qPCR thermocycler, which can be very expensive. There are MANY options on the market with variable price and features and many websites will only reveal the price after contacting a sales rep. Can anyone suggest a good low-cost qPCR thermocycler?

Here are some additional criteria to help:

  • We'll likely only process a few hundred to 1,000 samples per year, so low throughput machines are probably fine (I understand that over time, higher sample machines may be cheaper, but I don't expect to process that many).
  • Heating and cooling rates can be slow in favor of a cheaper price
  • We don't need to have many channels.
  • Refurbished options are welcome.
  • The primers are designed already, so while it'd be nice to perform gradient PCR, it's not necessary.

Thanks in advance for your time and input! I've been a little overwhelmed trying to make the right selection.
