A Future undergraduate research project is planned to build an experimental model for active suspension (simulating a quarter car model) to apply different control strategy including LQR. What would be the suggested components and modules to build the experiment? Shake Table II (https://www.quanser.com/products/shake-table-ii/) is available and might be utilized with some acceorometers.
Regarding active suspension system, I suggest active actuator combined with variable damper. Basically this is the physical vibration control problem, there must be a spring elements also present.
At first you should define the control function and relevant bandwidth. Because each actuators has its bandwidth ranges. High bandwidth actuator typically requires high cost.
For LQR (we already tried LQR in c-code level with real-vehicle), you should define the appropriate states definitions. If you choose relative displacements as a states, you had better adopt LVDT (or RVDT) sensors. You may build the system with acceleration sensors also with good estimation algorithms.
For stability, the first starting point is the sinusoidal inputs, you can exert a random road profile (such as white noise) to validate the control algorithm with the form of PSD shapes. For random road profile case, you might pay more attention to make loop delays for control stability. For the small experimental models, this would be the very good research test bed for the the control algorithms.
