A few advices: 1) review publications about local traditional knowledge, in this case about medicinal plants; 2) make a pre-selection of species with interesting medicinal uses; 3) consider the species origin, i.e. better endemic or native; 4) browse how many papers on phytochemistry and medicinal trials have been published on the species; 5) explore where you would get the material from (in terms of availability and permits); 6) think about where you could get the funds from to work on that species; and 7) think where you could eventually publish your research. You may have to go back to step 1 many times, until you find suitable species for your circumstances.
