I have checked the boundary condition it's correct according to literature. I have defined surface to surface contact between two soil surface using "hard normal contact" and tangential behavior using "penalty friction algorithm" with a co-efficient of 0.8 to define rough interface.

1. Did you turn on the NLGEOM option?
2. Is it implicit or explicit solution? If Explicit, use double precision.
3. Have you check material property and contact solution properly? This can be one of the reason that lead to instability of the surface contact, and cause instability.

Thank you. I have checked the previous discussion before but I wanted to know is it due to the interaction definition (sticking, slipping and penetration problem that we generally observe in such contact case) or something to do with material property. Actually, I was doing a half model test considering a plane strain slice of a reinforced foundation problem for which I have obtained the results. But when I have made it a full model tests and I have increased the reinforced soil layer height I am getting the warning message leading to non-convergence. So, it seems there should not be any issue regarding material property as previously I obtained the results.

I have figured out the solution so wanted to share. Initially I was using surface-to-surface contact for which there was non-convergence probably due to penetration as by default surface overclosures were not corrected using it. Using General contact the solution finally converged as by default, the general contact algorithm adjusts the initial positions of surface nodes during preprocessing to remove small initial surface overclosures without generating strains or stresses in the model. Thus, it will be wise to use general contact when you have any confusion as it also able to serve contact-pairs like surface-to-surface contact.

What kind interaction property did you use, is it frictionless? What is the value of friction property?

I haven't used friction-less contact. Instead I have used penalty friction formulation which is based on Coulomb's friction with hard normal contact. You require to give the interface friction co-efficient for it, which is tan of the friction angle between any two surfaces in contact.
