About 14% of newborns yearly are admitted to neonatal intensive care after birth, of those about 5% will be severerely ill. For some children, it could take years to get a proper diagnosis, time the children just dont't have. For instance, several metabolic malfunctions lead to infants' becoming mentally impaired or die. Some of these diseases may only be identified with sequencing. Unfortunately, the cost of this procedure is about $20,000.
