Outbreaks of a new type of infectious disease can be discerned in western health care systems at around 5-6 years apart. Each outbreak is associated with an increase in emergency medical admissions, deaths and wider costs. Could these outbreaks be due to cytomegalovirus or are there other alternatives?

Outbreaks of infectious disease can be due to many reasons for known and unknown agents , viral recombinants as in influenza virus, new genotype variants as in norovirus, low vaccine coverage for vaccine preventebles with the subsequent increase in suseptible populationjust to mention some. What is essential is to learn about the epidemiology of these outbreaks, from clinical presentation to age distribution ,travel history , transmission mode, associatiated risk factors and so on. I find the question too broad to answer in any case I agree with the lack of plausability for CMV nature of these events?
It seems more likely that the continued over use of antibiotics is what lends to these outbreaks rather than CMV. With an estimated 75% of today's manufactured Antibiotics making their way into the food chain via farm animals that are slaughtered and used for protein; we are all getting an overburden of antibiotics and thereby providing quite an extensive education to the problematic types of bacteria in our environment. The bacteria that survive mutate and learn how to overcome our efforts more and more voraciously. Super bugs are the "most fit survivors," and we would be well served to use antibiotics much more cautiously and much, much less often.
