A body of mass 'm' is colliding on an energy absorber mounted on a rigid wall. How to calculate the length of deformation/crumple on Energy absorber?

There is a mass 'm' separated from an energy absorber (which can be any material) at a distance 'd'. The mass has a velocity of 'v' and collides the energy absorber. How do we determine the length of material deformed/crumpled on the energy absorber without using any software and hand calculation alone.
