Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a virus closely related to the SARS virus. The disease first emerged in Wuhan, China and was named during the 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak.Those affected may develop a fever, dry cough, fatigue, and shortness of breath. A sore throat, runny nose or sneezing is less common. While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some can progress to pneumonia and multi-organ failure. The case fatality rate is estimated at between 1% and 3%.

Place specimen in biohazard bag and seal. Specimens should be stored at 2-8°C following collection and shipped to Laboratory on ice packs. If transport of specimen to testing laboratory will be delayed more than 72 hours, specimens should be frozen at -80°C and shipped on dry ice.
Package and ship primary clinical specimens to the local Laboratory in accordance with the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.
