I have a polymer sample (as film) with me which is in wet state. Can I take XRD of that sample without drying it? Will the water content in the sample affect the result? Can anybody explain?
The water content should decrease the order in your film, but should not be visible in the diffraction pattern if it’s not included in the lattice. Unless the water would be absorbed in a nanostructured gel and increase the volume of this structure at low angle, at RT and with a normal XRD pattern the only change would probably be a decrease of crystallinity. At low temp this would be a different story because of the water freezing. But if there is water included in the asymmetric unit, like in a complex .xH2O, the first water molecules absorbed could change the cell parameters and also the diffraction pattern.
