Our Australian government has just dropped a big bombshell whereby local PhD students will need to pay up to $30,000 for fees.
Given the current austerity climate prevailing in many universities around the world, is the PhD worth it? Or even for that matter, working as an academic?
What does this say about the double standards regarding the value of education in universities [e.g. commodity versus Enlightenment, though not necessarily just the political economics of higher education]?
Moreover, with the propensity for casual or adjunct labour, has aspiring to become an academic equivalent to being a film-director, actor, or game designer [no accident as all of which are Stars-systems]? Basically a disease you hope your kids wouldn't catch... :-)
