The hairy vetch has a greater content of Nitrogen and higher ability to mobilize quicker than red clover. Lower C to N ratio is the key to rapid mobilization which will favor the maize crop. The earlier stage of incorporation the faster the decomposition of vetch or red clover with vetch always having a greater ability to decompose more rapidly based on its lower C:N ratio. Overall I believe you will get better results from the triticale hairy vetch than your red clover timothy mixture. The ability to compete and control weeds and produce biomass and soil improvement should also be superior.

Decomposition of residue and release of nutrients depends on the composition of the type of plant tissue, not only with respect to the N content of the tissue but the kinds of C compounds in the tissue (eg., lignins, carbohydrates, phenolic and fatty compounds).  This can influence the rate of decomposition plant material decomposition as well as the microbes that decompose the materials, thereby influencing the production of  N2O as well as other decomposition products.

 Dr.Cihacek, your comments are interesting.We always interprete the decomposition rates of organic materials in terms of C:N ratios.The composition of plant material in terms of lignins ,hemicelluloses,phenolics or fatty materials or even proteins is not given due weightage .It is of interest to know how the leguminous materials having nearly similar C:N ratos differ in their decomposition rates becuse of  the differences in their composition.Similar is the case for cereal straws.It will be interesting to know with materials providinging sufficient nitrogen to microbes,how the microbes behave with some what difficult to decompose carbon sources.I request the colleagues to provide, if there is any published work on this aspect.

Dr.Malhotra and Saha,while searching for papers on manure composition, I have comeacross an interesting paper.In addition to mineralization, the study(10 weeks) involved gas fluxes,denitrification and microbial immobilization of N after manure application(four manure varying in C:N ratio16.15-22.23).Four important points from the summary are-1 Manure addition resulted in initial NH4 concentrations of 22.1 to 36.6 mg/kg in microcosms.All manured microcosms(manure plus soil concentration of respective N pool) had net decilne in soil mineral N .2.Denitrification resulted in the loss of 14.7 to 39.2% of the added manure N and the largest N losses occured in manures with high NH4 content.3.Increased soil microbial biomass N amounted to 6.0 to 8.6% of added N.4.While the microcosms as a whole had negative N mineralization,all microcosms had positive net nitrification within the manure bags.The study showed that the measurement of microbial biomass N and denitrification are important to understand the fate of manure applied.It is also important to know the amount and quality of readily available carbon in manures with particular emphasis on water soluble carbon.More details can be found in the following reference.
