I am trying to interpolate daily soil gas fluxes to estimate the cumulative flux. Linear interpolation is usually used by most of the researchers; however, it tends to overestimate the cumulative flux. Whereas, exponential interpolation is much smoother. Does anyone know how to do that?
Specifically which fluxes? CO2, CH4 or N2O? Becasue the most ideal way to interpolate these fluxes is to investigate the variables controlling the exchange process. These variables differ depending upon the trace gas species, the ecossystem etc. For CO2, for example, the variables could be soil temperature and moisture, GPP, soil decomposition substrates etc. The linear method of interpolation for cumulative fluxes is resorted to when you find that the flux rates are not explianed by any of the known controlling variables in your study. Also discussed are the variables controlling GPP, respiration etc.

Thanks for your reply. I am interested in soil N2O flux. To make myself clear, I was talking about the temporal interpolation, not spatial. For example, if I sampled four to five times in the month of July (peak emission time), and I would like to estimate the cumulative flux for the entire month. Now, I have to interpolate the emission for the days when I did't sample. I am not sure how the controlling variables can help here unless I am using a simulation model for the interpolation. I would appreciate your thoughts!
