One of the natural resources whose vitality captured by every citizen of earth is water with out which we do not exist. It cleanse and replenishes life. Caring and utilizing it in a sustain way has to be our utmost priority. Most political pundits always write future conflicts that might  happen due to waters to indicate how life supporting water is, although no country of a reasonable society will wage a war because of it.

Have you all heard the actual news about permanent water missing in southern California. No more drinking water (they drive around with small cans, they can´t wash, can´t produce on their fields, all plants are withering. It shows the coming horrors if even US can´t manage this problem.

I saw a recent news item showing Bill Gates with a glass of purified greywater for human consumption in California. The news item described that to overcome the acute water-shortage the wastewater has been processed through advanced technology to make it fit for human consumption. The only factor that needs to be overcome now is the 'yack' factor. The rural population is currently supplied with this purified water, the news read.

I know these pictures. But ground water is finite if purified or not. You cannot consume more than you will win from nature. And there are techniques to save water in agriculture. Don´t pour the water for your plants on the surface, bring it to the roots. It´s already practice in some desert like landscapes in near east.

According to Indian philosophical thought this entire cosmos of matter and energy is made up of only 5 building units called the pancha (five) maha bhuutaas (great elements) namely, aakasa (space), vaayu (wind-gas), agni/thejas (fire), ap (water-liquid) and kshithi (earth, planets, stars etc-solid). The pervasiveness of these elements increases from kshithi (solid matter) to all pervading aakasa or space. Among these water is considered as an important fundamental building block for life. It is also postulated in one of the theories of destruction of this cosmos that everything will be submerged under primordial water or salila. Thus water is life-supporting and life-destroying (floods, tsunamis).

Despite the common knowledge that water is vital for life, I do not think that there are serious sincere efforts to make it abundant in a useful way globally. The politicians in most parts of the world are short-sighted & they are to blame. They are generous when it comes to buying or developing weapons but I have not heard of any government  that has allocated material resources to increase the amount of useful water 3 or 4 folds to meet the future needs. The "joke" of pulling a huge ice mass by a ship from Antarctica has demonstrated that they were irresponsibly sarcastic. While most present wars are fought for controlling fossil fuels sources, the future wars may be fought for controlling the diminishing useful water sources.

Unfortunately, the situation is the same as in other cases: present business and political interests determine the mainstream media subjects and the voice of common sense and logical thinking cannot be heard. This is the typical way how troubles of this best of all possible worlds used to be managed.

The trouble is that there are week and greedy people who decide for the business interests and the common interest remains always in minority. The problem is that policy makers, businessmen and powerful people have learned nothing but the solely interest is to increase personnel power and richness. In the consumerist society today the emphasis is on exports and economic growth in all sectors. What many people and nations ignore is the amount of virtual water (hidden) going out of the country through agricultural and horticultural exports. this will never return to the country of origin. You can not measure the loss in dollars.

Beginning with Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Summit) till today no consensus has been reached about the global biodiversity sharing. While technologically and economically rich nations contend that global biodiversity is a common heritage of human kind, biodiversity rich nations contend that biodiversity of their countries is their national treasure. There have been conflicts concerning equitable sharing of biodiversity resources and paying dividends to nations from where biodiversity has been sourced for patented commodities. In all these debates water never received the attention and focus it deserved. Even in biodiversity conservation discussions, emphasis was laid on creating terrestrial biodiversity protection areas (PAs) neglecting marine and fresh water biodiversity PAs. In spite of the importance of water as a life-sustaining nature's gift, it has remained a globally neglected resource.

UN report says: The world will have only 60% of the water to cater the needs in just 15 years unless countries think and dramatically change their use of the resource.

I don't think there is a substantial problem to use a lot of water at places/in regions where there is a lot of rainfall accepting that it will not influence the global rainfall patterns and will not impact distant dry region

Dear friends, only yesterday some of us were jogging and brisk walking on the football field and my Malay friend mentioned that our neighbor had just burned some rubbish (biomass), and we better not go too close to that section from which the fumes were emerging.  He mentioned that we seemed so powerless even to mention the problems we faced recently: water rationing in some areas, haze in some months of each year.  But the authorities were more concerned about implementing GST (goods and services tax), making a lot of noise how it would benefit the country and individuals.  And no one seemed concerned about dwindling water supply, extremely high temperatures due to global warming in this place.
