Who are the leading authorities and radical thinkers on the subject of workplace learning in the digital age? I am aware of many non-academic writers on the subject, but am more interested in the academic/research body of evidence and theory.
Lesley, the leading authorities and radical thinkers on the subject of workplace learning in the digital age are likely to be the same SDL experts and/or those who have learned from them. Have a look at this paper and the REFS.
"This paper opens up new possibilities for self-directed learning and discusses how self-directed learning might be transformed in the light of technological and workplace changes. In particular, self-directed learning might decrease the HRD/training costs significantly while providing employees with just-in time training"
Article Reorienting self-directed learning for the creative digital era
Yes I've come across several self-directed learning studies which provide some fascinating insights. Interestingly, the 'lessons learned' (if I can call them that) from academic studies of SDL do not appear to have been translated into the commercial sector's application of so-called SDL. These strategies do not, for instance, tend to take account of the importance of human qualities such as self-efficacy and internal locus of control - even support. Thanks for the insights. It seems to me that the commercial world - in its application of e-learning/blended learning and so forth - has much to gain from research in HE. It may be that HE research in this area is overlooked because so much of it is concerned with academic environments and teachers/graduates - rather than 'corporate' work-based learning.
Hi Lesley, I wrote a paper on SDL in my college, collaborating with Ana from Romania. She has sent that paper to a journal and we are waiting for news. I expect to revise and make some corrections. I found that there are many SDL papers published in nursing journals. Surely nurses need to be independent and self directed. (3 of my cousins are nurses in UK.)
