What is the workflow/guideline to design/tune PID controllers for a Simscape model?

I am trying to tune/design a PI controller for a ICE-based driveline. The model is created in Simscape. The control objective is 'reference tracking' of the input drive cycle. To accomplish this tasks, I use all tools provided by Simscape and Sim control design toolboxes. However, I have not been able to get good results from simulation at this stage.
