My points are that to create a balance is difficult and I abstain from doing things that are not absolutely necessary and concentrate on those I really want to succeed in. I also make sacrifices.
I wish the equation was as simple as suggested by Uchendu. Research projects can be enlivening parts of academic life for many, whether they like teaching or not. It is further expected by the admin and the Academic board that you carry out research and bring in third-party funding. I can only come to terms with “Meld academic work with life” approach here and can feel that it has become my lifestyle, to actually circumvent the balance, but still try to be happy with the outcome:)
In my personal experience I make a balance between work, family and other related sections by priotizing like I will keep first priority to god, family then work.when we give everything in god's hands we can handle issues in conviently .
Hossein, achieving a perfect balance between work, life and other commitments is rather a tricky joggling act, not lease if one is in academia. Perhaps what is important to find such a balance (supposing it exists) is to pay greater attention and effort on those aspects without which life becomes meaningless, unhappy and dull. Recognising the value of each of these in one's life may be a good starting point to not only striking a balance but also enhancing the meaningfulness, dignity and happiness in one's and potentially other people's lives. Interesting question.
Job Satisfaction (and in our case -as Professors and Researchers-) is ESSENTIAL for PERSONAL happiness IN ALL ITS ASPECTS AND VICEVERSE already for SELF-ESTEEM AND SELF-REALIZATION (see MASLOW in his "HIERARCHY OF NEEDS AND MOTIVATIONS" and, humbly, some of my contributions here in "RG") ... not being able to give one without the other.
It is like acrobatics. If you are workaholic then your academic work comes at the expense of your time spent with family and other activities. To do a bancing act one may plan into high pay off and low pay off items and execute it accordingly.
home to home. workplace for workplace, work time for work time, family time for family time, ooh that i wish but as a personal experience, our scientific & academia job take all the time, so we should obtain more interest to our family.
It is not only the question of Work ;life balance & happiness in academia but it cover a wide range of career , & professional movement . With this some years back I have expressed my views in the similar line of action which I submit herewith for your kind perusal
It is not merely in the academic environment all of the environment where we are projecting our career whether academic ,business or professional career you have to move or planning as survivor of the fittest, for which one has to move according to t he planning by keeping in the mind & also in view of the latest development & technique for moving in the line with progress . This is my personal opinion
In my personal life, I have been maintaining a routine for years. I spent eight hours at work, six hours with my family (that includes my parents, my plants and trees in the garden and my pets - about 60 pigeons), I give one hour to myself. I sleep and take rest for almost nine hours. This is my daily routine. I go out for a pleasure shopping or watching movies once a week. Of course this routine has got disturbed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But I try to maintain it.
In India, we have long and extended families. Our uncles and aunts are a part of our family, even though they are staying separately. Even the uncles and aunts of our parents are a part of the family. All of them are considered relatives in our society. I try to visit every relatives' house at least once in a month. This way, I visit about fifteen houses a month.
This is how I maintain the work-life balance.
When I am surrounded by my relatives, whenever I spent time with my innocent pets and the energy releasing trees and plants, I feel very happy. I am a Hindu. Our holy book, Bhagwad Gita, says to enjoy the journey and not think about results. I try to do that. So I just keep on working. Results are very slow in my life. Most of my friends who are of my age, are much ahead in life than me. But that does not bother me. I am here to enjoy the journey of life. Just yesterday I was remembering the days when I used to pray to God for the things that I have today. I was feeling very happy after that. This is generally, how I try to maintain my happiness.
Thank you for your very relevant question, as for me , I have established my daily routine a longtime ago , I work a minimum of 8 hours but I have proportioned it in such a way that my day is scheduled between work , exercise including walking ; networking and reading . Learning and being evidence based helps .
Balance in every life aspect is required, and as for me, I have established a rule sheduling time between work, reading, networking and family, with taking rest at weekend to re-energize although I found it so hard to achieve work life balance in academia because it takes most of our time.
Una distribución adecuada de horas, tratando de mantener armonía entre el trabajo, la familia y la planificación educativa para las horas académicas. Es muy importante el conservar la tranquilidad y estabilidad emocional y no caer en estrés.
