Comparing the number of pre-published articles between March 15 and April 15, 2020 versus the same period the previous year, Frederickson (2020) observed an overall increase in the number of authors who submitted articles on arXiv servers and bioRxiv .. "I was surprised to see that there had been more pre-publications during the pandemic," admits the researcher. But this may be explained by the fact that a lot of administrative work has been suspended. There are fewer meetings, committees and travel times have also disappeared. ”
However, over the period observed, this increase is lower for women than for men. Between 2019 and 2020, the number of female authors increased by 2.7, compared with a jump of 6.4% for female authors. On the bioRxiv platform, the gap is less marked (+ 24% for women and + 26% for men) but the data used only takes into account the corresponding authors.

Dashun Wang, an associate professor of management and organizations, and director of the Center for Science of Science and Innovation at Kellogg (CSSI) wanted to help shed light on how scientific researchers have been affected during the months of lockdown. Overall, Wang and his colleagues found a steep drop in the hours worked by the scientists in their sample, from an average of 61.4 hours per week pre-pandemic to 54.4 hours per week in mid-April. When it comes to attributes of individual scientists, the most important predictor of how much a scientist is working during the pandemic is whether or not he or she is caring for young children. Survey respondents with dependents under five years old have seen their research time drop by 16 percent more than that of comparable scientists in their field- a difference that explains more of the variation than any other individual characteristic in the survey. Overall, female scientists have experienced more of an impact on their research time, with a 4 percent greater contraction in hours than their male counterparts. This is partially attributable to the fact that female survey respondents are slightly more likely to have a young child or children in their care. As research institutions think through policies to support those whose lives have been- and will continue to be- disrupted by the pandemic, Wang says it’s imperative that the outsize role of childcare be taken into account. He points out that for many research institutions, scientists’ work as caregivers is often hidden from view and rarely seen as relevant to the job. “Beyond policies such as parental leave immediately following birth, childcare is rarely considered in science policies,” he says, “so it may be an uncharted but important new territory for policymakers. It also suggests that unless adequate childcare services are available, researchers with young children will continue to be affected even after institutions reopen.”

The pandemic and the female academic
The decrease in the scientific productivity of women as a consequence of Covid-19 Pandemic may be temporary as with time it will return to its original position and may even improve more than before with the gradual return of previous life conditions to the pre-pandemic era.
The trend was temporary during the pandemic due to increased responsibility. The situation will normalize with time.
Both male and female facing the problem during pandemic in all aspects including research. As an when condition improved..
Again all is well
This problem was for sure temporary as working from home was difficult particularly for researchers who were also mothers. Things shall improve and get back to normal from now onwards.
New challenges were faced during this period for sure, but they are temporary, and I think with in few weeks every thing shall return to normal with all researchers

female respondents reported larger declines in the time they could devote to research than their male colleagues. And scientists with young children appear to have been particularly hard-hit, especially women, who remain primarily responsible for childcare. Understanding the degree to which these changes in time allocations may translate into changes in their scientific output (i.e., funding, publications) will be extremely important to track, especially given that gender is a variable relatively accessible in data-driven studies10. The pandemic will likely have longer-term impacts that are essential to monitor and address disparities, and further efforts to track the effects of the pandemic on the scientific workforce should clearly take into account household circumstances.

Researchers irrespective of gender are really having tough times amidst the pandemic.
Dear Evens Emmanuel You have explained based on an article that between March 15 to April 15 2020, the number of authors and pre-published articles increased substantially compared to the corresponding period during the preceding year. This is but natural as "if we cannot do research and/ or teaching because of Covid-19, at least we attempt to provide literary shape to the executed research". The second aspect is that the pace of the increase for women was a bit lesser. This is also natural because women researchers shoulder two prong responsibility: one at home, and other at professional working place. As working place was completely shut during the time, their major time passed on to domestic work. However, this seeming loss in professional productivity of women researcher is completely temporary, and it will resume very soon.

personnaly, my publication papers increased during covid 19 pandemic, but i can anderstand your point of view, some women working remotly find themselve at home surrounded by family duties and preoccupations as a mother or a wife. this can be a motive for her to be away from the professional envirement that pushes her to researches.

It seems interesting to question the feasibility of joint international publications (women / men). Indeed, this type of scientific partnership is now considered by research assessment agencies as an indicator of scientific performance.

The role of women in conducting research projects and publications during the last years in Lithuania have increased, at least - in social sciences. It is obvious at first glance, although statistics is necessary, of course.
I see general improvements among females in this regard. But, in Ethiopia, almost all house chores responsibilities are laid out to females and therefore they will be highly engaged in those responsibilities and their participation in research will be decreasing.
