I work on the impact of thaw slumps (collapsed ground due to thawing permafrost) on the Peel Plateau in the Northwest Territories and it's impact on streams. The intensity of these thaw slumps on the Peel Plateau in the NWT has been increasing due to a changing climate and the community up there has been wondering how this is impacting animal populations (eg. the caribou that travel through). We've noticed that the grizzly bears seem to hang around the debris tongues by the slumps (maybe it's easier terrain to walk on vs. the tundra?) but we weren't sure if there has been any research on this and whether the movement of grizzly bears can in turn impact caribou and moose populations and movement (or even if the thaw slumps have direct impacts on caribou and moose populations)?
