With the massive advancement in robotic system and biomimetics, many people fear that the use of robots in undertaking duties in institutions especially the industries may eventually widen the gap of unemployment on a global scale. Can robots execute assigned tasks better than humans? What are the merits and demerits of each other? What are your projections of the future?
The benefits: some things will become cheaper to produce and more convent for customers. The downsides? To get an idea.... watch Robocop or Terminator, read 1984 and Brave New World!

Robots will not replace humans in jobs & activities that require human interaction & interface & in situations which call for human judgement.
Benefits of automation would be robots replacing humans in risky, boring, repetitive & tiring jobs. In such jobs, robots execute the jobs better than humans & save human fatigue, leaving them to perform higher order jobs.
Computers can already beat humans at chess so expect a few more to be 'employed' in the knowledge economy too, at some point. Expect more electronically based self-service (which has become re-branded as the more exciting sounding 'co-creation') as a cost cutting/margin enhancing tactic by service providers. This may or may not involve robots but expect more computers either way.
Just wondering if robotics will replace humans even in the boardroom? Well it is already evident that jobs that are repetitive are culprits of a robotic take over. However, be that as it may, the positive side of this is the enormous opportunity it will create in AI related industry.....folks if you think of yourself as victim it is not late to start upgrading your skills.
Highly developed manufacturing flexible automation units, containing robots, were broadly applied in machine building since 1970-ties (Puma robots in car manufacturing, FANUC robots - car and machine tools building etc). So the process is in the progress on one hand, but from other hand, there no reasons to foresee rapid substitution of human by robots in near future. Chinese economic reforms since late 1970-ties and Chinese human workforce supply had slackened the pace of the process (why one need more expensive robots if here is cheap and reasonable quality Chinese workforce at his service?). I guess weakening of the Trade unions contributed the deceleration of robotization. Increase of governmental regulatory burden, pressure on the issues of anti-discrimination would accelerate application of robots (robots haven't habit to complain of discrimination etc). I'm sure, even without trade unions and without excessive business regulation robots will enter the workshops and other workplaces, but it will be slow, gradual, "natural" pace of development.
