To run my gel, I have to load my protein samples on one bench and then access the power supply on another bench. Is it common for samples to splash outside the well or into other wells while moving the tank? I am loading 12 microliters into 15 microliter wells.
Your results may be affected by this. When one sample splashed into an adjacent well, then a sensitive antibody will detect protein in the splashed well. Or, if samples are splashing out into the tank, then quantification of protein expression will be affected, because you will have no way to know how much sample was in your wells after the move. To prevent contamination of adjacent well, you can load every other well with sample. That way, if sample does splash to an adjacent well, it will not affect any other samples.
I dont' think that with12ul (a very small volume in 15ul well), you have splashing phenomenon, you have only to pay attention when you move the tank.
If you can't load your samples on the bench of power supply or viceversa, as I suppose,and you are afraid to move the tank I can suggest you two things, use a cart to move the tank from a bench to another; if you don't have a cart, you can load your samples without put the running buffe in the well, move the tank and load the running buffer on the other bench.
To obtain a definite result and a peaceful mind, I would suggest not to shake the tank, let alone moving the tank around. It is best to find a way you don't have to move the tank.
