It is quite an remarkable fact that English has become the dominant world language. A number of unique circumstance has imposed it but now that it has been established do not depend on these circumstances but on the need of the world to communicate globally and having provided that need, a monopoly has been de facto created and even if Britain and the US would disapear from the face of the world, English would remain the unique language of communication of the world.

I think English is evergreen for its appeal around the world. English govt may try it to shrinkage but to fail to make the dominance of other European languages. Though English is in-debt for it vast vocabulary from Latin, French and Spanish but still I think English is and it will be more acceptable as a gregarious language as a whole.

I reside in India, the country with people of different cultures, religions and languages. It was under colonial rule of British. Now the actual condition is like that English has become the only language for correspondence in the whole country. For study and research of science subjects, English is the only language media.

The dominance of English, while the consequence of a series of circumstances (British and USA Empires, both political and commercial), surely owes its position to the simplicity of its base language (Old English) and its acquisition of so many words from so many other languages. In Rome recently I could understand Italians, even though I cannot speak the language, and they, even those with limited English, could understand me. There are sufficient words in common to enable relatively easy communication.

I don't think it matters.the essential is that people should understand each other when communicating. Mandarin is also coming up powerfully. We follow the language not its source

Thanks for inviting my contribution, Barry. I suppose that we might look for an answer to Rome (the Roman Empire) and its language, Latin. It might be argued as a convincing response to your question, that Latin continued long after the fall of the Roman Empire. However, the fact that the Catholic Church (and its control of academia) took on the mantle may serve at least partially to explain the continuing strength of the use of Latin and its dissemination across Europe. If we were to take that as a paradigm, then the strength of the use of English continuing after the diminution of England as a world power would depend on some extraneous circumstance.

Perhaps that 'extraneous circumstance' might be the continuing power of the USA. Or rather, how long the power of American culture will continue!

Indeed the colonisation was a British one and not an England one. As shown above, the English language is no more the language of “the English” as it is of the Scots, Welsh, Irish, Americans, Canadians, New Zealanders, Australians etc.

In terms of extraneous circumstances, Maragaret, according to the Latin example, then surely Business, technology etc will be the right instances not the USA? But there, if new technology is introduced by China (see immediately above) will that language gain greater global use? We can truly predict the continued dominance of English as cultural and technological change may dictate otherwise.

I work in a multilingual environment where French and English are the 'official' languages. My colleagues are from all parts of the EU and we often converse in a peculiar mixture of languages. I write in French and speak in English and occasionally German.

I often feel quite self conscious as most of my collegues speak better English than I speak French or German. I often understand quite clearly what they are saying in French and German but prefer to speak English in conversation.

It is certainly the case that English speakers are spoilt in invariably being able to speak in their native language but, at the same time deprived of the benefits of speaking the languages of collegues due to the better abilities (due to better language education) they enjoy.

There is a lot of increase of interest by a small section of western youth for learning Korean because they like Korean pop culture. China is gradually becoming the first economy in the world and gradually it is becoming the first trading partner for more than half of the countries. Suppose that not in a far future China built the most incredible cities, the most incredible technologies and start dominating the world pop culture then the elite of each country will learn Mandarine and then the majority of people will also do and Madarine will become the world language. Of course, there are a lot of IF in this scenario but it would be a very likely scenario if the IF comes to pass. Right now the current chinese government has decided to maintain the Great Information China Wall, and so until it is the case, chineese cultural influences will be minimal and these IFs possible only for a while.

As we know that English is an International language & the language has contributed in all the sphere. Quite good countries are carrying out their program in English language .With this it has been observed that quite good countries are non English speaking & they also have their development in the performance of the working whenever it is necessary for such nation they also their development in their own language & their have developed their working environment in the line with English language for changing the same in their language . In this situation it is very likely England itself shrinks in importance .

This is my personal opinion

English is now globally and officially accepted langauge in major cases not only the Science. For Science it is as important as oxygen for our breathing.

There is no symbol of emergence new langauge is visible globally which will be as much accepted as English.

There is no sign of appearance of colonial system like condition so the chance of popularisation other languages seems also merely. Because if you want spread your dynasty spread your uniqueness and destroy theirs which is langauge. Thanks to this democratic system that now a country is not represented by single ruler so the lust of conquer survive no more.

Popularisation of Great Britain is decreasing it is a result of revolt colonial system but the English make it's root so deeper and higher that it will continue to spread farther.

And there is very famous quote i.e "when prisoner released from prison love the captivity".

This same occurred with England, people revolt against the Britain but accept the English with welcome.
