Zirconia appeared in the dental market as a strong yet ugly ceramics. They were Fit only as frameworks that to be veneered later by more esthetic feldspathic ceramics. It was indicated only in bilayered restorations as a substitute to metal alloys. Later, high translucency zirconia was introduced with more esthetic and translucency qualities. It took some of the market share and indications of e.max in monolith restorations and short FDP. More recently super , ultra, and top translucency zirconia emerged in the market having more strength and esthetic qualities than e.max. The e.max is still hanging by a single thread of hope that is its superior bonding to resin cement than zirconia. But who knows what the ceramic scientists and researchers are hiding in their sleeves for us.
