Hello, I have a question regarding water splitting done in 0.1M Na2SO4 (anolyte and catholyte) in a two-compartment cell separated by a Nafion membrane. Would one expect to see an increase in pH of the catholyte and a decrease in pH of the anolyte after the water splitting? I thought that the electrolyte pH would remain unchanged because the proton produced at the anode (2H2O --> O2 + 4H+) would cross through the Nafion membrane and be reduced at the cathode (2H+ --> H2). However, I've observed a drop in anolyte pH and an increase in catholyte pH.
